Split leather bends are usually used for Midsoles which, in the Goodyear welted shoe, are the layer between the bottom of the shoe and the outsole.

 The Midsole can be seen in the image as the dark layer between cork filler and outsole. It is used by most of the Goodyear makers in Northamptonshire for just this application. It is reasonably tight tanning and provides a good finish around the edge once trimmed.

 When a Goodyear welted shoe is refurbished, it is a common practise to replace the welt, Midsole and outsole with fresh ones and then re-stitch it all together and it will look like brand new again.
